The history of agriculture in the north of Rio Grande do Sul shows that this territory had an intense process of colonization, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Currently, this region is characterized by the predominant presence of family farmers. The colonization process of this large territory presents heterogeneities, revealing the existence of peripheral places, typical of a late occupation process. The objective of the article is to analyze the dynamics of agriculture in a peripheral region of Rio Grande do Sul, within the Northwest region. For this propose a comparative analysis of the development of agriculture in the municipalities of Porto Lucena, Porto Vera Cruz and Northwest was carried out. The work was theoretically and methodologically based on the Agrarian Systems Approach. As a result, the comparative analysis of the historical transformations shows that the lower support for the installation of the colonies, the local isolation, the difficulty of developing a road infrastructure and the low initial capitalization of the farmers, compromised the insertionof the peripheral region analyzed in the regional economy. These differences made the current dynamics of agriculture in the studied municipalities contrast with the development of agriculture in the Northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul.
A história da agricultura da metade norte do Rio Grande do Sul revela que essa porção do território gaúcho foi alvo de um intenso processo de colonização,ao final do século XIX e início do século XX. Por conta disso, atualmentea região destaca-se pela predominante presença de estabelecimentos da agricultura familiar. Todavia, o processo de colonização deste grande território apresenta importantes heterogeneidades, revelando a existência de locais periféricos, típicos de um processo de ocupação tardio. O trabalho tem como objetivo elucidar a dinâmica da agricultura em uma região periférica do Rio Grande do Sul, dentro da região Noroeste. Para tanto, foi realizada uma análise comparada do desenvolvimento da agricultura dos municípios de Porto Lucena e Porto Vera Cruz, em relação à dinâmica geral da agricultura da mesorregião Noroeste. Otrabalhose baseou teórico e metodologicamente na Teoria dos Sistemas Agrários. Como resultado a análise comparada das transformações históricas, demonstra queo menor apoio à instalação das colônias, o isolamento local, a dificuldade de desenvolvimento de uma infraestrutura viária e a baixa capitalização inicial dos agricultores, comprometeram a inserção da região periférica analisada na economia regional. Tais especificidades fizeram com que a dinâmica atual da agricultura dos municípios estudados,contraste com o desenvolvimentohegemônico da agricultura da região Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul.
